Gamescom 2011

Gamescom 2011 is over and it was a fantastic event with countless triple A titles being showed and though it is over, let’s not start crying yet. On Friday we have PAX 2011 taking place in Seattle and we still have lots of information and videos to see from that event. But let’s focus on what I thought was most impressive and interesting from Köln, Germany with Gamescom this year.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

The Old Republic is the next big MMO. It certainly under no circumstances will be as big as World of Warcraft, but it will squash every other competitor for sure as it’s already become the most pre-ordered EA title ever, and they haven’t even announced a release date yet, which is usually when people place their pre-orders.  At Gamescom we got some real nice reveals.

  • New Warzone: Huttball. Yellow versus Purple with the ball in the center. Environmental traps out there and the first team to take the huttball over to the other team’s side scores a point. Violence is, of course, allowed.
  • New Eternity Vault (raid/operation) gameplay: The first raid and endcontent in The Old Republic looked better than I expected and I can’t wait to start raiding it with my guild and slay big bosses for big loot.
  • New confirmed operations number: 16 players in the hardest operations.

Dota 2

Dota 2 was revealed at Gamescom for the first time with a million dollar tournament for the winner. Not a bad way to showoff a game, huh? Dota 2 looks beautiful, fun, and competitive. Valve have said that they are trying hard to make it a solid esport title and I am certain they will succeed. And if they do, and it gets esport support, you can expect me to play it religiously. Dota 2 is set to come out this year which is wicked sick! The perfect Christmas present?

Guild Wars 2

Though Guild Wars 2 info has been coming out steady for years now, it was only at Gamescom we got to see PvP for the first time and let me say: WOW! It was fast. Real fast. The fastest I’ve seen in an MMO and it looked too good to be true. And the bosses in Guild Wars 2 look better than in any other game that I have seen. Yup, they’re that good. That’s why it’s no surprise Guild Wars 2 is on my top three most anticipated game ever. It just looks too good and everything the developers are saying is gold. Oh yeah, they already have partnered up with ESL for esport competition. Can it get any better? I think not.

Wait! Where’s Diablo 3? Unfortunately Blizzard only talks massively about their games on their own event, Blizzcon. But they did have a small presence at Gamescom but what they said was horrible and sad and did everything but impress me.

One of the most pleasant surprises of Gamescom 2011.
