Pain and Gain

August 31, 2013

If you like fitness and believe in the American dream, then look no further than to Pain and Gain. This movie has both of those aspects and tons of humor on top of it. Pain and Gain was excellent in my opinion.

Based on a true story and set in Florida we get to follow a bodybuilder and his crew as they follow the American dream on the wrong side of the law. Mark Wahlberg is masterful as always and really buffed up insanely nicely for this part and I can’t do anything but to bow down to him and salute. He’s one heck of a guy I’ll tell you that.

Humor. Realism. True story. Fitness. Strippers. Success, right? Indeed.

Their American dream is bigger than yours.

The Vampire Diaries

April 17, 2013

One of my “new” favorite television shows now is without a doubt, The Vampire Diaries. I just finished the first season and I can’t get enough.

I recently begun my marathons of series as I they have begun to pile up and I don’t really want to have that much to watch during summer, and VD was on top of my list and I am happy it was. I mean, how hot isn’t Damon, am I right? Also Caroline isn’t too shabby either. 😉

Vampires are hot, dangerous and very in right now so I wanted to join the phenomenon and next up for me is True Blood and then back to VD again. I need to at least have seen one season of each show to determine which one I want to see through first. But there are just too many shows in my queue. How will I have a life with so much greatness coming out of Hollywood?

Vampire sex is always hot. And bloody. 😉

March 11, 2013

I finally managed to see the much talked about movie Lincoln in which one of my favorite actors, Day-Lewis managed to win an oscar for. Was it any good?

The answer is yes, it was good. However, it might not be what many expect. It’s what some people would like to call an “artsy” movie with only story and progression without any action or exciting scenes. In that regard, it has a very limited audience that will appreciate it.

As always, I will not spoil a single thing. It’s about Abraham Lincoln and Day-Lewis plays his role exceptionally well. I mean, he won an oscar for it, so I guess I’m not alone in thinking that. In the movie are also some other stars that impressed me such as James Spader and Tommy Lee Jones. Plus more that minor parts such as Gordon-Levitt. Very nice to see.

The focus of the movie was when Lincoln was re-elected and wanted to abolish slavery and end the civil war, which to me was very interesting things, so I enjoyed the movie as it was very well-written and directed. And acted. Yes, a very solid picture, but like I said earlier, it has a limited audience that will appreciate it. Especially in these days where there’s an explosion scene in every movie.

Great motion picture.

Dark Shadows

October 16, 2012

I never got the chance to see Dark Shadows in the theater. Well, I had the chance, but I just never got around to it. There were other priorities and better movies to see and now that it’s out on Blu-ray disc I snapped it up to enjoy in HD in my own couch.

Johnny Depp plays a vampire and does so very well. It’s not a horror movie by any means, in fact, it’s more to the comedy side with a tad drama on the side. There are some really funny jokes here and there and Depp plays his character enjoyably.

The movie itself isn’t that impressive by any means. The story is has been done in various forms before, and though it was interesting to see and it’s definitely worth seeing, it’s not spectacular. Expect a few laughs here and there but that’s about it. I wasn’t really super-intrigued or glued to the movie but I did want to see how it would end, even though it was predictable, at least to me.

The Avengers 3D (Spoilers)

May 3, 2012

My expectations were relatively high, I must admit. I mean, why wouldn’t they be after seeing good flicks like Iron Man and Captain America? The Avengers could’ve been something truly magic and beautiful. Instead, it was predictable, drawn out, and a clichĂ©.

The story was rather generic and dragged out. Loki invades earth. Takes special weapon. Avengers need to get weapon back. Then the standard of up and downs of team spirit and all that obvious arise. Tony Stark and Thor made the movie no doubt. Their jokes was the only true light and some occasional comments from Loki as well.

With so many heroes, I expected a lot of fighting and deaths. Unfortunately there was only one death. Loki’s general/tactician needs to be fired. I mean, he invades New York City in broad daylight with an ALIEN ARMY carrying ALIEN WEAPONS and not a single human dies? Bullshit. That just does not happen. Sure, after fighting a few minutes and whatnot people would start hiding and evacuating the city, but as it happened now, at least several hundreds of thousands of people would have been killed and if the aliens were smart enough they’d taken out massive buildings and caused true chaos. But now since the Avengers were so “superior” and so little chaos was created, the movie just felt like a fairy tale where no bad things could possibly happen.

Needless to say, I am deeply disappointed. With a fairy tale story where nobody dies, and the standard setup of hero movies these days, The Avengers is nothing more than just another superhero movie. And not even an impressive one I might add considering its potential with so many great superheroes.

With heroes like that, the movie should have been mind-blowing.

Battlestar Galactica

April 18, 2012

I just picked up Battlestar Galactica season 1 on Blu-ray. I don’t know why. I haven’t seen a single episode of the series but I heard good things about it so I thought, why not? I’ll give it a try.

Expect updated impressions once I’ve seen a few episodes. Do any of you follow the show? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

This box is now in my collection. Let’s see if I’ll add another one.

Final Destination 5

February 25, 2012

You can’t cheat death five times… right?

The Final Destination series have always impressed me with their genius scenes and really left a mark on me. I still remember all the previous movies as if I saw them yesterday. They’re that good.

I’m not going to spoil anything as it’s one of the major selling points to experience everything for yourself for the first time in these movies. But it’s about death. In a cool way.

If you’re looking for a movie that will twist your mind and most likely have you react strongly to some real wicked scenes then this is your movie. It’s even better when your girl keeps screaming and looking away because of the scenes.

Scream 4

August 8, 2011

I just got Scream 4 on Blu-ray and am really looking forward to watching the lastest movie in the Scream franchise.

Scream has always been somewhat of my favorite “scary movie” series together with “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and I am sure it goes for many others as well. Most likely, it was their “first scary movie” that was memorable with that trademark white mask with black eyes and mouth. Who doesn’t get nostalgic seeing that?

Of course you can expect a review from me later on. My expectations are a bit mixed, but time will tell. I am open-minded. I am sure it will be great to see Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette once again fighting for their lives.

True Grit

February 21, 2011

The Coen brothers are back and bring us yet another masterpiece that should not be missed by anyone that enjoys motion pictures.

True Grit is actually a remake of the old movie with John Wayne with the same exact name. Only this one stars Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Even though we have Matt Damon whom I consider to be a world-class actor, it is actually Jeff Bridges that shines the most in this story and delivers the best performance of his career in my eyes. Quite an impressive achievement. Not to discredit Mr. Damon, but his role did not really suit him. That dirty cowboy look simply isn’t him and they could have easily picked a more suitable actor to play that role. However, Damon does not ruin the movie in anyway or makes it worse, but I just feel as if there could have been more suitable actors such as Christian Bale or Edward Norton to play that part.

Western movies are associated with dirty filthy cowboys and we have plenty of that in True Grit. The setting is perfect and so is the script. It feels incredibly authentic and accurate. It delivers an unmatched experience when it comes to the good ol’ days that I wish I was a part of. However, do not see this movie expecting a lot of action and bank robberies, if you do, you will be disappointed. True Grit focuses on storytelling and more specifically on the story of a young girl. I don’t want to give more away because it’d really be a spoiler in my eyes.

Great writing, directing, acting, and story makes this movie a no-brainer. It is one of the most superior western movies that I have seen to date and I would recommend and encourage everyone to see it. But keep in mind that this is no action flick with explosions and wild chases all the time. Despite having a rather serious approach True Grit offers quite a lot of comedy and memorable laughs throughout which truly enhances experience.

Tron: Legacy 3D

December 17, 2010

Tron. One of my most hyped movies of the year. I finally saw it, in 3D. Did it live up to the hype? The answer is yes.

With Tron: Legacy seen, this leaves only one more movie this year for me before I can officially declare a winner for 2010. But enough of that, let’s get back to the movie at hand, Tron.

Tron delivers a unique movie experience in the sense that it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Its story is unique and so is its theme. And they’re both spectacular.  There isn’t really much to say about Tron without spoiling it for people that don’t know what happens, so let me just cover the basics of the flick.

The actors are great. The special effects and detailing is superb. This movie delivers on every level and it does it extremely well. The story is truly engrossing and I was not bored for a single second. The 3D effects were fairly good although nothing spectacular or even close to impressive, but still passable. Like I said earlier, I had very high expectations and I am glad to say that the movie delivered and met my high requirements I had put out for it.

Tron: Legacy is one of the strongest contenders for movie of the year and a must-see for everyone that loves cinema and sci-fi. Tron might be mostly aimed for guys, but I still think that some girls will enjoy it even though they aren’t gamers or fans of sci-fi. It’s a fantastic world that they have created and I cannot wait to see in 1080p. I will pick the Blu-ray up immediately for a rewatch.
